Enhance Your Leadership Skills—Part 7 of 10

By Bill Bozeman, President and CEO · Comments (0)
Saturday, May 12th, 2012

Demonstrate concern.

If you’re in a leadership position, you make hundreds of decisions each day.  Most of those decisions have the potential to impact the well-being of others. Caring for the people who work with and for you every day can profoundly and positively impact your business through increased productivity and workforce engagement. Your decisions impact the social fabric of your team, your company, and your personal relationships – for better or worse.

These steps will go a long way in demonstrating concern:

  • Listen—Compassion and caring for others’ thoughts and opinions as human beings, even if you cannot implement all suggestions and requests,  has a direct impact on the retention of talent.
  • Ask questions—When engaging with your co-workers, peers and staff, don’t assume you know all of the answers or understand where they’re coming from. Demonstrating genuine interest generates trust.
  • Encourage—Allow people to take chances and make recommendations.  Practicing forgiveness for well-intentioned mistakes is necessary for innovation to flourish and developing people for future success inspires and energizes them.
  • Show Gratitude—Appreciate the diversity of perspective, talent, and interest within your organization and thank people for what they bring to the table.
Demonstrating personal responsibility and a concern for the common good as a leader is one of the major drivers of productivity and workforce engagement. Actual business results can, of course, be impacted by dozens of factors, but a CEO who cares only about pleasing Wall Street and demonstrates little concern for the common good will erode profits and jeopardize the long-term sustainability of the company.
Next week we will review the seventh step in the series of ten for improving your leadership strategy: Navigate and establish direction.

Enhance Your Leadership Skills—Part 6 of 10

By Bill Bozeman, President and CEO · Comments (0)
Saturday, May 5th, 2012

Seize Opportunity.

After gathering the necessary data and information to anticipate challenges, a good leader will be in a position to seize the opportunities presented by industry changes and trends. A mark of a strong leader is their ability and willingness to take definitive action. Leadership involves the wherewithal to move things forward in the face of adversity and change.  Others may see and understand, but a leader takes action, and gets others to go along with them.  The leader should be the first one to take a step, the one who inspires others to do something about it!

Using the strength of your team’s knowledge and expertise, the data that comes from recurring SWOT analyses, and the eyes and ears on the front lines and in the field will give you the perspective needed to make quality decisions.

These are the steps to ensure you’re positioned well to seize opportunities as they come along:

  • Increase efficiency—Achieve a productive workforce by creating a happy workplace, allowing flexibility in work hours where possible, mapping your workplace processes to determine any inefficiencies that can be eliminated or changed, keeping up with new technology that can improve your business practices, and encouraging your employees to work as a team or participate in group projects to foster better communication.
  • New vertical markets—There may be significant growth opportunities for your company in expanding into new markets.  Consistently investigate opportunities and assess the potential to take your current products into new customers segments, markets and applications.
  • New offerings—Product/service innovation can create new ways to solve the customer’s problem that benefit both your customer and your company. Listen to customer needs and keep an eye toward new product innovation as an ongoing source of growth and prosperity.
  • Expansion—Evaluate whether increasing the number of stores/branches/offices will create growth through allowing easier access to your products and services.

One important tip to remember: you need to get buy-in! Don’t make these important decisions in a vaccuum, without taking the knowledge and input of the people around you into consideration. Listen to their concerns or questions and address them or incorporate solutions into your strategy, and people will be behind you all the way.

Next week we will review the seventh step in the series of ten for improving your leadership strategy: Demonstrate concern.

Enhance Your Leadership Skills—Part 5 of 10

By Bill Bozeman, President and CEO
Saturday, April 28th, 2012

Anticipate challenges.

After gathering the necessary data and information to see the big picture, a good leader will analyze and breakdown the data to anticipate which industry changes and trends will impact the organization.  The next step is to present the data you’ve collected to your team, share your ideas and ask for input on how to effectively prepare and plan for success.  Conducting a SWOT Analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities & Threats) every 6 months will mitigate surprises by keeping a constant eye on the market competition and allow you to more effectively leverage your differentiators or make strategic changes.

Once you’ve collectively conducted your SWOT Analysis, these are the steps to ensuring follow through and the ability to react effectively.

  • Prepare yourself and your team
    • Provide training
    • Provide resources
    • Communicate expectations
    • Offset weaknesses by emphasizing strengths
Next week we will review the sixth step in the series of ten for improving your leadership strategy: Seize opportunity.

PSA-TEC 2012 Announces Keynote Address: The Future of the Independent Security Integrator

By Krista Ferndelli
Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

Dean Meyer, Schneider Electric

Westminster, CO – April 23, 2012 – PSA Security Network® is pleased to announce Dean Meyer, EVP Buildings Business at Schneider Electric, as keynote speaker at its cornerstone event, PSA-TEC 2012. The keynote address, entitled “The Future of the Independent Security Integrator,” will cover the lessons learned from the past in the security industry, the current state of the industry, and the future role of the independent contractor in North America from the perspective of a multi-national player.  Discussion topics will include analog and IP video trends, the impact of the cloud on the IP channel, and sales as a service (SaaS). The keynote address will take place during the PSA-TEC Welcome Reception on Monday, May 14, 2012 at 5:30 PM.

Dean Meyer has been associated with the security industry as a contractor since 1993, with responsibilities for security systems integrations and access control products.  He understands the day-to-day world that PSA Security Network integrators and partners live in and has perspective from the viewpoint of a strategic supplier.  Today, Dean is responsible for the global security strategy and its deployment, as well as the energy management initiatives for Schneider Electric.

This topic is important because technology trends won’t end with IP.  Dean describes that the next big change in the industry will be the cloud, and it will have profound implications on integrator businesses, making the focus more about selling monthly services.  Integrators will still be putting in gear, but end-users will be paying for the data coming from the installations.  “These technology changes will have implications on financing, competency and skill sets, and strategic planning.  The changes won’t all happen tomorrow, but they are already happening today.  How we position ourselves in light of the trends will make all the difference for our success; we can’t make the livings we’re making today, doing what we’re doing the way we do it today, 5 years from now.”

Dean states, “This keynote address will be a conversation, not a typical speech. PSA-TEC is a unique opportunity to share our views and our perspective with colleagues, get feedback, and validate perceptions and ideas—a collective vision of where we’re going is always better than a single view.”  Dean is of the opinion that Schneider Electric doesn’t profess to have all the answers, but they have one view, and gaining additional perspective is always important to a big-picture understanding of the industry and the future. He explains, “I hope to extract as much from the conversation as I contribute to it.”

Bill Bozeman, PSA Security Network

Bill Bozeman, president and CEO of PSA Security Network says, “This keynote address is important because the very backbone of the business is changing.  We have concerns over whether the privately owned physical security integrator will be squeezed out of projects or end as a second-tier subcontractor.  Dean Meyer is uniquely positioned to express an opinion concerning this very important positioning move for you and your company.”

PSA-TEC 2012 will be held May 14 – 18, 2012 at the Westin in Westminster, Colorado, with the exhibit hall open on Wednesday, May 16.   For the latest information regarding this event visit www.psaTEC.com or search #PSATEC2012

Enhance Your Leadership Skills—Part 4 of 10

By Bill Bozeman, President and CEO
Saturday, April 21st, 2012

See the big picture.

Great leaders don’t focus solely on their own view of their company and the work to be done. To be a successful leader you must have a continuous finger on the pulse of the industry. Leaders need to see what external factors are helping or hurting the industry, how end-users are embracing new technologies and services, where grant dollars are being allocated, and ultimately, which of these factors can have a positive or negative impact on their company.

This well-rounded point-of-view is essential. It is necessary to dedicate time to work ON your business, not only IN your business. Here are some steps to help you look beyond the obvious and see the bigger picture:

  • Study industry trends
    • Read the trade magazines every month.
    • Go to industry conferences and learn from the experts.
    • Read the intelligence reports by market-makers and statisticians.
  • Identify changes in customer expectations
    • Continue to educate your customers on new technologies and services.
    • Stay in continuous contact with your customers and learn how they utilize the systems in place.
  • Generate new business opportunities
    • Review your portfolio of offerings frequently to ensure you are not missing any opportunities.
    • Stay up-to-date on new regulations and compliance programs that drive demand.
  • Adjust your business plan
    • Analyze your margins and markets.
    • Find ways to be more competitive and offer your customers better solutions.
    • If you haven’t already, get into the managed services business.
  • Leverage your assets
    • Your people are your biggest asset. Train them to represent your company and empower them to bring new ideas to the table.
  • Establish alliances
    • Partner with groups and associations in your area that can introduce you to potential leads and partners.
    • Find ways to work with integrators of other types, including Audio/Visual companies, Network Integrators and other entities with whom you can exchange new business.

Simply having a vision is not enough. Leaders need the ability to analyze the big picture to create a vision that will lead them to success. In order for you to effectively lead, your followers need to believe that you have the knowledge and the vision necessary to reach your goals. Leaders are also navigators.

Next week we will review the fifth step in the series of ten for improving your leadership strategy: Anticipating challenges.
